Name: Callum Prinn
Role: Higher Apprentice Operations Manager
My dad first encouraged me to apply for a Tarmac apprenticeship, and it’s definitely been one of his better pieces of advice! I liked the idea of being fast-tracked into management and learning valuable skills in an exciting industry at the same time as studying for a degree.
I work at Tarmac’s Barrasford quarry in Northumberland where I’m responsible for overseeing the blasting, crushing and rock screening. There’s a lot to do and it can sometimes be tough, but as a team we’re really supportive of each other and I’m often asking questions of the more experienced team members who are always happy to help.
Away from the quarry, I’m studying for a Mineral Extractives Technology degree at Derby University. I go to lectures at the university to prepare for assignments, which are on a variety of quarrying topics, and talk through what I’ve learnt from working onsite.
It’s been really interesting to see how my work helps to build the world we live in. When we extract the rock from the quarry it is then used for the construction of homes, offices, schools and hospitals.
Applying for my apprenticeship is hands down the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s given me the opportunity to work for an industry leader in one of the biggest sector’s in the UK, gaining experience and qualifications at the same time. It’s definitely worth sending in an application.
