Name: Liam Owen

Role: Trainee Supervisor

I first joined Tarmac in 2014 as a management apprentice. Since then, I’ve gained the industry knowledge and management skills I need to succeed in my current role as a Trainee Supervisor. I won Apprentice of the Year in 2016 at the national Highways Awards, which was a proud moment for me.

I work out of the Birtley depot in Tyne and Wear, one of Tarmac’s big regional offices. My highlight of the job so far has been implementing the latest digital technology developed by Tarmac to help customers resurface their roads. I was part of the team that first used the technology on the Morpeth Northern Bypass and actually replaced the specialist engineer who had been hired on the job because I learnt how to use it so fast.

The technology has been really successful and because of my knowledge, colleagues have asked me to help them present it to potential new customers.

Tarmac has motivated me from day one to challenge myself and develop my skillset to become the best manager I can possibly be. I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved, especially the high level of responsibilities I’ve been given, so I would certainly encourage anybody looking for a challenging career with plenty of development opportunities to apply.
