Vacancy: Policy Research Officer

Collab Group is a membership organisation representing 30 innovative colleges across the UK. We work together to promote and further the interests of the college sector’s large providers and to provide solutions to the skills and economic growth challenges of the UK by:

  1. Being the campaigning voice of larger colleges on key areas of government economic, skills and sector policy.
  2. Increasing and leveraging the individual and collective capabilities of our colleges through the sharing of practice.
  3. Creating the opportunities for talent to grow and leadership to emerge across our college network.
  4. Generating profitable joint commercial business.

Our policy, best practice and talent activities involve us working through political, government and industry to represent the view of larger colleges and to position Collab Group colleges as the leading providers of technical education in the UK. At the same time, we are developing programmes to create capacity and capability within our colleges through greater exchanges of ideas, insights and people as well as targeted leadership programmes we will bring on the next generation of talent.

About the role

We are looking for a policy research officer to support our policy and best practice activities working in a small team and reporting direct to the CEO. The postholder will also work closely with Collab Group members who are senior leaders in the further education sector. This is an opportunity for an individual who want to develop their research and stakeholder management skills working in a small team focused on the UK skills agenda.

Key Responsibilities will include: Policy

• To undertake research projects relating to our current areas of policy focus at the discretion of the CEO and Collab Group members
• To contribute to the production of policy briefs, policy reports and strategic plans • To develop and implement project plans for public affairs and policy activity.
• To assist the CEO in engagement activities with external stakeholders (notably government, Parliament, and industry) to further the policy priorities of the Collab Group.
• To produce a range of copy including press releases, blog posts and news articles • To monitor developments in further education, skills and employment policy • To play a key role in shaping our policy work

Supporting strategic projects

• To work with the CEO to develop, manage and deliver on the strategic theme of best practice

• To provide administrative support to our leaders’ meetings

• To assist with the administration of Collab Group networks

• To provide ad hoc support for projects and events as required

• Effective team working skills

• Excellent written communication skills including the ability to write high quality copy

• Excellent research skills and an enthusiasm to learn

• Ability to work independently and proactively, without supervision on own initiative.

• Experience of working under pressure to meet tight deadlines.

• Proven time management and organisational skills required to manage a busy and varied workload.

• Good interpersonal skills, openness to change in a dynamic environment and a positive attitude.

• Ability to learn new skills “on the job”.


• Educated to Degree standard

• Desirable candidates will have a background in one or more of the following o Working within Government (either at local, regional or national level) o Working within the Education Sector o Working within a communications role

• Knowledge of content marketing and search engine optimisation techniques • Knowledge of social media tools

Contract terms This is a permanent position. The salary for this position is £22,000.
