Case Studies

Here are two case studies of the great work our colleges are doing internationally

Skills for Employability - Westminster Kingsway College in Vietnam

Westminster Kingsway College has been working with Vinh University of Technology Education (VUTED) since 2012, securing Skills for Employability funding for 2013/2014. The project included Up-skilling and capacity building to enable Vietnamese teachers and trainers to respond to the Ministry’s initiative to widen the roll out of qualifications and the associated assessment framework.

In May 2015 the British Council granted the partnership further funding for an Advanced Skills for Employability project. Within the year of British Council funding, Westminster Kingsway College and VUTED established a National Centre for Teacher Training and Assessing Learning in Vietnam, delivering an internationally recognised qualification awarded by City & Guilds. The partnership underpinned a skills reform in the Vietnamese education sector by enhancing standard and teaching curriculum in vocational teacher training.

Panama Bilingüe – Edinburgh College in Panama

In 2015, Edinburgh College became one of the first institutions in the UK to be awarded a contract to train Panamanian English language teachers, as part of the Panamanian Government’s “Panama Bilingüe” programme. This is a five-year programme which aims to achieve a change in English language competency in Panama by upskilling up to 10,000 teachers in English language and pedagogy.

Edinburgh College has so far welcomed over 300 English Language teachers in 15 cohorts. These have included in-service elementary and high school teachers, who follow 8-week programmes, and pre-service elementary school teachers, who follow 16-week programmes.

As the courses have taken place in Edinburgh, trainees have had the opportunity to observe English Language classes at Edinburgh College, to visit local schools to compare with their own teaching contexts, and to stay with homestay hosts, giving them a complete immersion experience of the language and culture of Scotland. The project has been a great success, and Edinburgh College looks forward to receiving more teachers from Panama in the coming months.
